Our Teachers

Academic Director/Lead Guide

Miss Tonya joined Smockville Montessori in 2008, as our Academic Director and Lead Guide. She has a B.A. in Accounting from Devry University, and is a Certified Montessori Guide through the United Montessori Association.  She began working with children in 1997 as volunteer and classified substitute for the Beaverton School District.  In 2001, she became a Classroom Assistant in a Montessori school, where she found her calling.  After five years as an assistant she wanted to learn more about Montessori and studied to be a Certified Montessori Guide.  In her spare time she enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking, camping, and just being outside.

Miss Betsy joined Smockville Montessori in 2010, and is our Co-Guide.  She began her studies in early childhood education in Southern Oregon, before moving to Portland where she received her Montessori Certification from the United Montessori Association. She has been working and directing children for twelve years, beginning as a camp counselor and then as a traditional preschool teacher. After searching for a teaching philosophy that could enrich and inspire ever-capable minds, she discovered Montessori and has never looked back. Betsy offers the children her talents in art and the Spanish language. In her spare time, she enjoys gardening, healthy cooking, the great outdoors, and good friends and family.

Lead After-Care Guide/Substitute Guide

Miss Angela joined Smockville Montessori in 2011 as a substitute, and then became our Lead After-Care Guide and morning substitute Guide in 2013.  She has an A.A. in Early Childhood Education, and a Certification from the International Association of Progressive Montessori. While working in California she fell in love with the philosophy of Dr. Maria Montessori and began her path to become a Guide.  Miss Angela has worked with children for 20 years, 13 of which have been in Montessori schools.  In her spare time, she like to read murder mystery books and romance novels, and eat Peanut M&M's.

Classroom Assistant

Miss Yohanna joined Smockville Montessori in February 2015 as a classroom assistant. She is originally from Venezuela and has a B.A. in Human Resources. She began working with children in 2006 as a volunteer at a church, and in 2009 she started working as a Classroom Assistant in a Montessori School. After becoming a mother, she took three years off and now has returned to work. In January 2016, she will be starting her Montessori certification at United Montessori Association. Miss Yohanna is fluent in Spanish, and she is really excited to teach her native language to the children. In her spare time she enjoys going for long walks, and loves to spend time with family and friends.
